BETTY J. CARRILLO
Betty J. Carrillo, 79 years, of Toledo, OH, passed away late Friday evening, January 2, 2009, in her Sumner Street home. Betty was born to Della and George St. Clair in Lansing, MI. For almost 20 years in the 1950s and 60s she trained horses in the Lansing area with her mentor, Eloreen Barnes. Betty received her Associates Degree from the University of Toledo and retired in 2003 from NODC where she had worked 19 years. She was a member of and the 1st woman elected President of Latins United/Latinos Unidos as well as being vice-president of the S.A.O. Club (Spanish American Organization) and a member of the Country Music Association in the 1960s. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Carlos and children, Mike (Vickie) Johnson, Brian (Shannon) Johnson and Kathleen Johnson and grandchildren, Ann Marie and Zita and great-grand-children, Dryden, Austin, Logan, and Laura. 7 step-children and many grand and great grandchildren also survive. She will be missed by her close cousin, Jim (Jackie) Wheeler and her beloved Cockapoodle, Cinnamon Sugar. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Connie Gibson Carrillo, who died in 1985. The family thanks the staff of Northwest Ohio Hospice for their loving care.


MARIA BERRIOS
María Berrios (née García), age 85, of New Port Richey, Fla., formerly of Lorain, OH, died on Sunday, December 28, 2008, at Heather Hill Nursing Home, under the care of Hernando-Pasco Hospice, in Florida. She was born on September 16, 1923, in Comerio, Puerto Rico, moving to Lorain in 1949, where she has lived most of her life until moving to Florida in 2000. María was employed at Dalton Inc. as a seamstress for 17 years, before retiring in 1983. She was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, where she sang in the church choir and was a member of the Cursillo Movement and auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary. She loved singing in the church choir, along with playing BINGO, cooking, dancing, and arranging flowers. María is survived by her son, José Antonio, of Lorain, her daughters, Ana Julia (José) Diaz and Mary Jane Landry, both of Florida, 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and her sister, Francisca García, of Puerto Rico. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Sixto Sr., in 1986, a son, Sixto Jr., parents, Evaristo and Juana García, a brother, Julio García and sisters, Matilde Garayua and Ana Sotomayor.


JUAN RODRÍGUEZ-VICENTE
Juan Rodríguez-Vicente, 84 of Lorain, OH, died Tuesday, December 30, 2008, in his daughter's home in Lorain following a lengthy illness. He was born July 26, 1924, in Guayma, Puerto Rico. He lived there all of his life until moving here to live with his daughter in February 2005. Juan worked in Guayma in various grocery stores as a clerk. He enjoyed horse racing and playing the lottery. He loved entertaining his family and friends with his sharp wit and humor. He will be sadly missed by his sons Juan Rodríguez of Guayma and Antonio Rodríguez of Youngstown; his daughters, Ilumunada Rodríguez of Guayma and Elva Rodríguez of Lorain; brother Rafaél Rodríguez of Lorain; many grandchildren and many great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Gregorio Rodríguez and Carmen Vicente; a son, Reinaldo Rodríguez in 2006; a brother, Gilberto Rodríguez and a sister, Monserrate Rodríguez.


ROSE GARCÍA
Rose García, age 96, formerly of Adrian, MI and Metamora, OH, passed away on December 27, 2008. She was born to John and Elizabeth (Rendon) García on November 13, 1912. She spent her career working as an Assembler for Hoover Ball and Bearing for 27 years, retiring in 1973. Rose was an avid lover of household painting and refinishing furniture. She was also a member of Immaculate Conception Church for 35 years. She had a great devotion to her family, especially her nieces and nephews. Rose was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Louis, Frank, Theodore and Fred García; sisters, Sarah Bush, Pauline Rojas, Juanita Miller, Sally Vargas and Stella García. She is survived by her sister, Lola Tomecek; brother, Thatcher García; nieces and nephews, Ron García, Isabel Rojas Dailey, Ruth Ann (Terry) Mohler, Alice Sutton, Ray (Cheryl) García, Fred (Linda) García Jr., John García and special nephews, Hank García and Joseph Vargas.


MARTIN GARCÍA JR.
Martin García Jr., 75, of Toledo, OH, died on Thursday, December 25, 2008, at his home. He was born on May 31, 1933, in Houston, TX to the now deceased Martin Sr. and Janie (Martínez) García. Martin was a leader welding instructor for Jeep Corporation. He was active with the Union Local 12 and the Jeep Retirees Association. Martin was a former member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Gibsonburg. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving is his significant other, Mary C. Thompson of Toledo; children, Alice (Hector) Cisneros of Toledo, Gloria (Manuel) Salazar of Gibsonburg, Albert (Kathy) García of Toledo, Dora Padilla of Denver, CO, Martin (Jane) García III of Maumee and Diane Ramírez of Oregon, OH; siblings, Angie Sánchez, Steve García, Helen Cardosa all of Toledo, Hank García of San Antonio, TX, Manuel García of Clyde, Jim García of Toledo, Abel García of TN, Janet García, Geneveive Vásquez both of Toledo and Gilbert García of Houston Texas; 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, and many primos.


SERGIO ORTIZ
Sergio “Joe” Ortiz, age 67, of Toledo, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 22, 2008, at St. Charles Mercy Hospital. Joe was born in Brownsville, Texas, the third of the ten children of Esteban and Teresa Ortiz. The Ortiz family moved to Ohio in 1957. Joe grew up in the Toledo area and graduated from Whitmer High School in 1962. Joe joined the United States Marine Corps in 1963 and served 4 years, achieving a rank of Sergeant. Upon his discharge, he joined the Port Clinton Police Department, serving with them for fifteen years. Joe then worked for L.O.F and then Davis Besse in the security departments, retiring in 2002. While in the service, Joe married Anita Montano, his long time sweetheart. They raised their family in Oregon and were proud grandparents. Joe is preceded in death by his brothers, Antonio and Alberto, as well as his parents Esteban and Teresa. He is survived by his children, Randall (Jeanne) Ortiz, Melissa (Bob) Tonkel; his brothers and sisters, Esteban Jr.
(Grace), Armando (Dorothy), María (Silvero) Castillo, Ida (Armando) González, Izzy (Celia), Homero, and Elida (Jerome) Bechstein. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Kelsey, Allison, and Megan Ortiz; Ariel and Ethan Tonkel.


ANNA ROSE ROSARIO
Anna Rose Rosario (née Mosley), age 56, of Lorain, OH, passed away on Friday, December 19, 2008, following a lengthy illness. She was born January 11, 1952, in Martin, Kentucky and later moved to Ashtabula, Ohio. She had been a resident of Lorain for the past 38 years. She was a homemaker who enjoyed being with family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed walking at Lakeview Park, reading and listening to country western music. Anna will be sadly missed by her husband of 38 years, Isaias “Cecila” Rosario; her children Felicita Anderson of Elyria, Isaias Rosario, Jr. and Diana Soto, both of Lorain and Jose Rosario of Tampa, Florida; brothers Roy Mosley of Cherry Valley, Ohio and James Mosley of Oklahoma; sisters Lee Mosley and Venda Pendelton, both of Lorain; 10 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Tharp and Tessie Mosley; a brother, Tharp Mosley Jr.; a grandson, Ted Anderson; and a nephew, James Mosley.

RUBEN ZAMORA-GARZA
Rubén Zamora-Garza, 58, of Lorain, OH, died Saturday, December 20, 2008, in the Cleveland Clinic following a brief illness. He was born July 3, 1950 in Lorain. He was a life-long resident, with the exception in 1969 he spent in Seaside, Calif. Mr. Zamora retired this year from Norfolk and Southern Rail Road as a foreman, where he worked as a track patrolman and safety committeeman. He worked there for 38 years. He was a co-owner of Zamora’s Crossing in South Lorain. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War. Mr. Zamora was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain. He enjoyed playing pool, bowling, trimming his bonsai tree, oldies music, and children. He was an avid Browns fan. He was also a member of the Mexican Mutual Society and the Puerto Rican Home. Among the survivors are his wife of 37 tears Judith “Judy” Zamora (née Davila); and a son Rubén G. Zamora, Jr. of Lorain; his mother Consuelo Garza (née Rios) of Lorain; sisters Mary Montanez and Catherine Martínez both of Lorain; brothers Santiago “Jimmy” Zamora of Lorain and a grandson Dominic E. Jones Zamora of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his father Miguel Garza; Grandmother Brijida Vara; and Uncles Frank Rios and Larry Rios.


MIGUEL A. FIGUEROA
Miguel A. “Mike” Figueroa, age 72, died unexpectedly Sunday, December 14, 2008, at his home in Coamo, Puerto Rico. He was born February 12, 1936, in Coamo, Puerto Rico. He came to Lorain in 1952 and worked for the Lorain Ford Motor Co., retiring in 1988. He moved back to Coamo after retiring. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marcia (Millard) Figueroa, daughters Jeannie Rivas of Lorain, Michele (Figueroa) Ivey of Elyria and Marla (Figueroa) Greenhill of Lorain, son Michael Figueroa of Amherst, sisters Theresa, Gloria, Esther, Monserrate and Delia, all of Puerto Rico, brother Francisco Figueroa of Lorain, 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was preceeded in death by his parents Esteban and Margarita (Matos) Figueroa, sister Lillian, and brothers Victor Matos Figueroa, Anibal Figueroa, and Luis R. Figueroa.


REV. FREDDIE GARCÍA SR.
Rev. Freddie García Sr., 63, of Lorain, OH, went home to be with the Lord, Monday December 15, 2008, in his home, following a brief illness. He was born March 22, 1945, in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico and moved to Lorain as a small child at the age of six. In his younger years, he enjoyed boxing. He loved to sing, preach and enjoyed playing the guitar, but most important of all he loved to win souls for the Lord. His motto was, “If God could save me, He can save anyone.” He was the pastor and founder of Jesús the Way Christian Fellowship Church for 12 years. He also was the founder of “Drug-Free through Christ” in 1989 and “Jesús the Way Prison Ministries” in 1994. Survivors include his wife of 19 years Carmen García (née Figueroa) of Lorain; mother Juanita García (née Negrón) of Lorain; sons Rev. Freddie García Jr. (Little One) of Tampa, FL and Anthony James García, Shawn Michael Bellamy and Ray Anthony García of Lorain; daughters Lorraine A. García and Selena García, both of Lorain; stepsons Alex Aponte of Buffalo, NY, José Aponte, Angel Aponte and Javier Aponte, all of Lorain; 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brothers Rev. Israel García of Tampa, Fla. and Frank García, of Lorain; sisters Jenny Rivera and Lillian García (Matos), both of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his brother, Benjamin García, in 1995; his father, Francisco García, in 1997; and brother Bienvenido García in 2001.




CARMEN MARTÍNEZ
Carmen Martínez, age 71, of Toledo, OH, passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. She was born January 3rd, 1937, to Maximo and Consuelo (Sausedo) Espinoza in Reynosa, México. Carmen was a longtime member of the Stickney Congregation of Jehovah Witness. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and cherished the time she was able to spend with her family and friends. In addition to her parents who passed away on the same day in 2000, she was preceded in death by her son, Manuel Martínez. Carmen is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Apolonio Martínez; children, Diana (Rick) Barrera, Larry Martínez of Tennessee, Frank (Anna) Martínez, Martin Martínez, Janie Martínez of Colorado, Michael Martínez, Yolanda Martínez of Texas, Rosa (Jorge) Zapata, María Elena (David Lemmerbrock) Martínez and Irene (Mike) Collins; 27 grandchildren; 15 great-grand-children and siblings, María Bravo, Rosa Aguilar, Manuel Espinoza, Pepe Espinoza, David Espinoza, Irene Delgado, and Israel Espinoza.


ROBERTO MATOS
Roberto “Chiqui” Matos, 49, of Lorain, OH, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2008, in his home. He was born February 18, 1959, in Chicago. He came to Lorain In 1992. While in Chicago, he worked in home building and as a remodeling carpenter, as well as in the restaurant industry. Mr. Matos was a member of Iglesia Casa de Oración, Lorain. He was active in Christian ministry, visiting prisons and nursing homes. He enjoyed music, movies and playing basketball. Among the survivors are his wife of 12 years Devora Matos (née Colon-Marrero); daughter Adinia Matos of Chicago; stepsons Edgar Otero of Lorain, Ramón, Cesar, David and Emanuel Pedraza, all of Lorain; his mother, Carmen Sánchez of Ciales, Puerto Rico; brother Angel Matos of Lorain; sisters Carmen and Evelyn Matos both of Chicago, Linilda López of Lorain, Mayra López of Ciales, Puerto Rico and Lysette Vega of Chicago; several grandchildren and several brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico. He was preceded in death by his father, Roberto Matos, and a sister, María Matos.


THELMA L. MIRANDA
Thelma L. “Candy” Miranda, 50, of Toledo, OH, passed away in her home on Monday, December 8, 2008. She—“The World's Greatest Mom”—will now be with her beloved husband. Thelma was born on March 26, 1958, in Toledo She was a graduate of Woodward High School. Thelma is survived by her parents, Margaret (Townes aka Clucky) and Edward García; sons, Richard (Shannon) Adams, Joseph (Michelle) Adams, Robert (Bobbie Jo) Myers, Anthony (Christine) Wheatley, and Allen (Maria) Wheatley; special nieces and nephews, and by 17 grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister, Jamie Townes; brothers, Edward García and Johnny Evans. She was preceded in death by her husband, Miguel Miranda and brother, Carl.


LUIS ANTONIO RUIZ
Luis “Louie” Antonio Ruiz was born into this world to Roberto and Eugenia Ruiz in Toledo, OH, on October 3, 1992. In the blink of an eye, on December 14, 2008, he left this world suddenly and unexpectedly. Though here for such a brief time, Luis lived every moment to the fullest. His enthusiasm and joyous spirit spilled over into everything he did and everyone he met. He enjoyed a good game of hockey and was an avid fan of the Detroit Red Wings. He was into NASCAR racing along with his Dad, uncles, and cousins. Old cars and music were also a big part of his life. Education was important to Luis and he recently prided himself in turning his grades around. It turns out he was pretty good in math! One of his favorite pastimes was eating homemade tamales and mole with his Mom and Abuelita. Luis found solace in attending a weekly youth group at Calvary Assembly of God. Most of all, Luis enjoyed the time he spent with his big family, especially his cousins. Luis is survived by his parents, Roberto and Eugenia Ruiz; his sister, Justice Ruiz; grandmother, Carmen Sosa; his uncles, Antonio, Gilberto (Linda), Augustine (Melanie), Juan (Sherry) and his aunts, María Meyer (Ralph), Olga, Diana Ruiz-Krause (Robert), Linda Bringman (Chad), and Lupe Carper; as well as his many cousins and friends. Luis was predeceased by his grandparents, Antonio and Odilia Ruiz. Though Luis’s parting has left a huge void and his family and friends will truly miss him, the many happy memories he gave us will be treasured forever.


TERRILL THOMPSON
Terrill “Terry” James Thompson, 59, of Toledo, OH, passed away Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. Terry was born September 5, 1949, in Barberton, OH to Donald and Ruth (Johnson) Thompson. He graduated from Kenmore High School. He went to Mount Union College and earned his Masters Degree in Accounting from The University of Akron. Terry was an A1C in The United States Air Force. He married Jessie Schmelling on May 27, 1972, in New York and she survives. Terry was currently the Treasurer for Republic Development Corporation. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he sang on the Praise Team and taught confirmation for fifteen years. He was a certified USSF, NISOA, and OHSAA soccer referee, a board member of the NWOSOA and a Civil War buff. He also was a soccer referee of La Liga de las Américas soccer league, based in Toledo. 

Terry is survived by his loving wife, Jessie; children, Kristen Leigh Thompson, Trevor Jason Thompson, David Ryan Thompson; sisters, Rev. Ellen Little, Merry (Richard) Kostko and brother, Dennis (Christy) Thompson and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Megan Lynne Thompson and his parents. Known for his sense of humor and engaging personality, Terry shared the love of Christ with others as only he could.


ANA ALVAREZ
Ana “Annie” Alvarez, (née Carrion), age 53, of Lorain, OH, died on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at the Cleveland Clinic. Annie was born on May 13, 1955 in Lorain, where she has been a lifelong resident. She was a 1973 graduate of Southview High School and had attended Lorain County Community College for a year. Annie was the owner of the flower shop “I Do I Do and Something More” in Lorain. Prior to this she worked for the IRS in Cleveland for 10 years. During her life she was active in the Latino Community in Lorain. She was formerly involved with Image, a Latino employment program, the board of directors at El Centro, Lorain Chapter of the Ostomy Association and the Colitis and Ileitis Foundation of Cleveland. Annie enjoyed playing bingo, cooking, baking, especially wedding cakes, going shopping and being with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Roberto Alvarez, of Alvarez Auto Body, 2 daughters, Anita M. Ramsey (née Yee) of Indiana, and Carol Milagros Yee, of Lorain, grandchildren, Martin Nieves, Ileana Yee, Jaselyn Nieves, Michael Ramsey, Jr. and Joshua Ramsey and brother, John Carrion, of Lorain. She was preceded in death by her father, Teodoro “Cabito” Carrion Flecha in 1989 and her mother, Providencia “Provi” Carrion Maldonado in 1995.




Community activist Angel Guzmán dies on Dec. 12

Cleveland’s Consumer Affairs Director Angel Guzmán, 58, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, after a brief illness. A native of Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico, he came to Cleveland when he was 5. Mr. Guzmán became a well-known advocate for Latinos through his service on several boards and organizations, and at various agencies, including Hispanic Business Association.

Numerous individuals paid tribute online to Mr. Guzmán such as: “Our prayers are with you. The Hispanic community has lost a very special person but Angel’s work in the community and his memory will live on forever”— Sharlene Ramos Chesnes (Stow, OH); and “Angel was truly an “angel.” He will never be forgotten by the community and the people who hold him dear. Many years ago, his mother helped my family through difficult times. Each time I saw Angel he always greeted me with a smile I’ll never forget! We love you Angel and know you are resting in peace. Your spirit will live on in our memories and in our hearts!”—Love, Leslie Estremera (Brooklyn, OH).

Mr. Guzmán is the son of Felicita (deceased) and Virgilio; he is the loving father of Angel Jr. and Carlos; dearest brother of Nelson (deceased), Justo, and Matilda “Marty” (Dennis) Schall; dear uncle of Gina, Dana, Melanie, John, Dylan, and Louie (deceased); beloved cousin and friend to many.


ANTONIO G. RODRÍGUEZ
Antonio G. Rodríguez, age 81, of Toledo, OH, passed away peacefully, early Thursday, December 11, 2008, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio surrounded by his loving family. Antonio was born on June 13, 1927, in New Braunfel, Texas to Isidro and Pudenciana Rodríguez. He was retired from the Toledo Terminal Railroad where he had been employed for 40 years. Antonio enjoyed dancing especially with his loving wife, listening to his Mexican music and spending time with his grand-children, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed gathering many family photo memories. He never wanted to miss any special moments. Antonio was a very strong, faithful, soft-spoken man, who was loved and admired by many. Antonio is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mary Camargo, Soccorro Martínez and two nephews and a niece and is survived by his wife, Mary Dolores of 54 years; children, Gloria (Tom) Carl, Gabriel (Carole) Rodríguez, Cordelia (Matt) Williams, Corinne (Jim) Dombrowski; grandchildren, Carrie (Jason) Parker, Aimee (Doug) Palowski, Nicholas (Amanda) Carl, Jacob (Patricia) Carl, Zachary and Olivia Williams, Melissa and Austin Dombrowski; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Santos (Gloria) Rodríguez, Joseph (Patricia) Rodríguez and many nieces and nephews.


ELIESER ROSA
Elieser Rosa, 58, of Lorain, OH, passed away on Dec. 7, 2008 in E. M.H. Regional Medical Center, Elyria, following a lengthy illness. He was born June 26, 1950 in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, and raised in Lorain. He graduated Admiral King High School in 1968. Elieser worked at U.S. Steel, Lorain for many years, and then as a security guard until 2004. He was actively involved in his daughters' sports teams and was their coach for Girl Scout softball for several seasons. He made friends wherever he went, and enjoyed working outdoors in the yard. Nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his grandchildren Robert Torres, age 3 and Amaya Torres, age 1. Also surviving are ex-wife, Miriam Rosa (née Cortes) of Lorain; wife-separated Lilly Rosa (née Hurst) of Elyria; daughters, Alexandria Rosa and Amanda Cruz (Rosa); sisters Augustina Cortes, Celia Hernández, all of Lorain; 12 nieces and nephews; 11 grandnieces and nephews; and 6 great grandnieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Felipe and María (née Santiago ) Rosa, brothers Lorenzo Rosa and Herman “Tito” Cruz, and nephew Wilfredo Cortes.


ANTONIA I. GUTIÉRREZ
Antonia I. “Toni” Gutiérrez, 38, of Bowling Green, OH, passed away on Friday, Nov. 28, 2008. She earned her nursing aide certification at Otterbein-Portage Valley, Pemberville, and also had worked at Bowling Green Manor Nursing Home. A 1988 graduate of Otsego High School, she also had briefly attended Bowling Green State University. She collected pigs and loved movies. Ms. Gutiérrez was born in Bowling Green to Osvaldo Armando and Julie (Telles) Gutiérrez. Surviving are her mother, of Tontogany; five sisters, Julie Ann McGilvery, Toledo; Evelyn Painter and Estela Poetzinger, both of Bowling Green; Sidelia Reyna, Oxford; and Adela Gutiérrez, Perrysburg; two brothers, Arturo Gutiérrez, Bowling Green, and Armando Gutiérrez, Tontogany; and a grandmother, Delia Morena, of Brownsville, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Sherry Konst.


JESUS S. GARCÍA

Jesús S. García, 74, of Deshler, OH, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008, at Bridge Hospice Care Center, Findlay. He retired in 2006 from Consolidated Biscuit, McComb. He previously worked for the Village of Deshler Water Department. Mr. García was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Deshler. Born Jan. 4, 1934 in Kenedy, Texas, to Fermin and Guadalupe (Sauceda) García, he married María Antonia Flores on Sept. 25, 1960. She survives. He was preceded in death by a son, David, and a sister, María Rodríquez.


KENNETH JAMES HINOJOSA  
Kenneth James Hinojosa, 39, of Toledo, OH, passed away November 30, 2008, in his home. He was born in Toledo on February 1, 1969, to Kenneth King and Irma Hinojosa. Ken had been employed as a sales clerk at Family Dollar and other various retail sales. He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church and the Rossford Eagles. Surviving are his mother and father; custodial parent, Aunt Elvia Kaufman; son, Brandon Thomas; many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.


ELIJAH EMILIO MOLINA
Elijah E. Molina, 6 weeks, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, November 29, 2008, at The Toledo Hospital. Elijah was born October 16, 2008, in Toledo to Anastasia Molina and Celso Cásares. Though his time on earth was very short, Elijah had touched the hearts of many and was loved and loved by all. In addition to his parents, Elijah is survived by his loving grandparents, Scott and Deborah Swan, Cathy Cásares. Also surviving are great-grandparents, many aunts, uncles and cousins. Elijah was preceded in death by his grandfather, Leo Cásares.


DOLORES REYES ORTIZ 
Dolores “Lola” Reyes Ortiz, 83, born to José Morales Reyes and Guadalupe Posada Reyes on June 11, 1925 in El Campo, Texas, peacefully went home to be with the Lord. She made her transition to be with her heavenly father on Friday, November 28, 2008, in Billings, Montana. “Lola” leaves to cherish her memory, sons, Chris and Danny Hernández and Phillip (Mary) Ortiz; daughters, Maria Elena (Pat) Smith, Nacha (Scott) Davis; forever daughter-in-laws, Barbara Gunn and Chareze Wells; brothers, Emeterio (María Luisa) Reyes and Juan José (Dolores) Reyes; sisters, Mariana (Joseph) Krupa, María Elena (Gilberto) Ramírez, Rosario Jaime and Criscelda (León) Long; special companion, Tom Soumas; 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and a host of loving cousins, nephews, nieces and special friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, José and Lupita; husbands, Frank Hernández and Pablo Ortiz; daughter, Diana Hernández.


LEONOR ANTONIA FLORES LÓPEZ

Leonor Antonia Flores López passed away on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at St. Charles Hospital. She was born on May 29, 1921, in San Buena Ventura, Coahuila, México. She was a resident of Martin, Ohio for over 55 years. Leonor was a dedicated mother of ten, Otila L. Borjas, Estela (Esequiel) Escobar, Leonor Hernández, José E.F. (Susana) López, Aurora (Raúl) Cárdenas, Jorge A. (Vicky) López, Juan David (Rosa) López, and José Luis F. López. She enjoyed nothing more in life than spending time with them. In addition, her 32 grandchildren and 32 great-grand-children were her pride and joy. She spent her time cooking authentic Mexican foods for her family and always cherished having them around daily. She took pleasure in planting her flowers every spring or just spending every Sunday outdoors barbequing with her family and friends. She appreciated her sugary snacks, especially caramelos, or caramels. She loved to shop for any occasion and always dressed herself and her family with a sense of style. She will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Antonio M. López; parents, Pedro Antonio and Leonor (Mendez) Flores; 6 brothers and 2 sisters; son, Antonio Jr.; daughter, Juanita; granddaughter, Veronica and son-in-law, Ray Borjas.


ESTEFANA HANDY
Estefana Handy, 86, of Toledo, OH, was born November 13, 1922, passed away Monday Nov. 24, 2008, at the Franciscan Care Center. She was the wife of Albert C. Handy, who died four years ago, after 56 years of marriage. Estefana retired from the Southend Majores Senior Center where she served as Director, (then managed by E.O.P.A.). Estefana will be remembered for endurance through life's obstacles. She told all that she met and cared for, that she loved them. With those words she left us. Estefana is survived by her daughters, Edna (Bill) Leonard and Diana Armagost; sister, Esther (Sam) Fernández; grandchildren, Alyssa Wyman, Cynthia Leonard, Tiffany Sindyla, and Aimee (Izzy) Briceno; great-grandchildren, Jacob Belcher, Robbie Lamb, Noah Turner, Isabelle and Mya Briceno, and Dana Puente who is deceased.


ERISTEO MUÑOZ
Eristeo “Teo” Munoz, age 64, of Toledo, OH, passed away peacefully Friday, November 28, 2008, in his home. He worked for S.E. Johnson for 22 years and was a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista. He was a very loving and caring family man who enjoyed his home grown garden and spending time with family and friends as well as his pets. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rumaldo and María Muñoz. He is survived by his wife, Minerva; daughter, Irma Randolph; granddaughters, AnaAlicia Muñoz and Tiffanni Muñoz; great-grandson, Xavier Rumaldo Mora; siblings, Dalia (Israel) Espinoza, Javier (Patty) Muñoz, Amadeo (Karen) Muñoz Sr., Diana (Johnny) Ramírez, Alvaro (Lorraine) Muñoz as well as 16 nieces and nephews.


RICHARD DURAN PECINA
Richard Durán Pecina, 52, of Toledo, OH, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, at the Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus. Born in Oregon, OH, on November 10, 1956, he was the son of Magdaleno San Miguel and Ruperta (née Durán) Pecina. Richard enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting, fishing, and playing ball. Surviving are his children, Raquel Flores, Bianca (Pete) Pecina, and Philip Pecina; mother, Ruperta Pecina; brothers, Robert (Evon), Marty (Mercedes), Gregory, and Leno (Jodi) Pecina; sisters, Ramona Oviedo, Flora Gonzáles; and grandson, Dylan. He was preceded in death by his father and sisters, Sonia (Pecina) Nores and Virginia (Pecina) Hudson.


AMALIO RODRÍGUEZ
Amalio Rodríguez, 79, of Lorain, OH, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 at Oak Hills Nursing Center, Lorain, OH, following a lengthy illness. Born May 3, 1929 in Lares, Puerto Rico, he came to Lorain in 1949. He worked as the manager of Kysel Greenhouse in Rocky River for 16 years, retiring in 1970. Prior to that, he worked for New York Central Railroad repairing railroad tracks. Amalio was a baseball fan and loved to play cards, dominoes, and watch all kinds of sports. He also enjoyed refinishing furniture. Surviving is his wife of 57 years, Marciana (née Mercado); sons, James of Katy, TX, Edwin of Pensacola, FL, and Amalio Jr. of Noblesville, IN; daughters, Minerva Ocasio and Isabel Rodríguez-Silva both of Lorain; 26 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren; a brother, Jesús Rodríguez of Wisconsin; sisters, Matilda Soto of Lares, Puerto Rico, Josefa Díaz of Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Agustina López and Generosa Rodríguez both of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrés Rodríguez in 1972 and María (née Camacho) Rodríguez in 1980; a daughter, Santa Hilda who died at birth in 1958.


FELICITA MONTIJO

Felicita Montijo, (née Otero), 49, of Lorain, OH, went home to be with the Lord

on November 20, 2008 after a brief illness, She was born September 2, 1959 in

Lorain, to Carmen and Felix Otero Deliz. She was a graduate of Southview High

School in 1978 and attended classes at Lorain County Community College. Felicita

was a library assistant for 22.5 yrs at Lorain Public Library. Felicita was a member

of Iglesia Casa De Oración and previously a long standing member of Iglesia De

Dios Pentecostal Ebenezer both of Lorain. She loved spending time with her family

and grandchildren; she especially enjoyed cooking, making crafts, and crocheting.

Among the survivors her husband of 29 years Efrain Montijo, Jr. of Lorain; son

Isaac G. Montijo of Lorain; daughters Elsa I. (Jeremy) Rivera, Ivelisse (Ralph)

Harris, and Naydalisse Montijo all of Lorain; her mother Carmen Otero (née Reyes)

of Lorain, her grandchildren, Marielyse and Sara Lee Harris and an expected

grandchild in Jan; brothers William (Kathy) Otero, Luis (Sharon) Otero, Felix

Otero Jr., Danny (Yvette) Otero Ralph Otero , Moises (Shannon) Otero all of Lorain,

Richard (Virginia) Otero of Goodyear, AZ; sisters, Olga (Gene) Ward, Joann

(Ignacio) Morales both of Lorain, Auria (Edwin) Correa of Cape Coral, FL, and

María (José) Montero of Cleveland, 17 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in

death by father Felix Otero Deliz, grandparents, several aunts, and uncles.
 



ENRIQUE A. PÉREZ

Enrique A. Pérez, 80, of Lorain, OH, died on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008 following

a long illness. He was born July 15, 1928 in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. He and his wife

moved to New York City in 1951 and then to Lorain in 1974. He served in the U.

S. Army in the Korean War. Enrique retired from the City of Lorain in 1990. He had

worked at the Parks and Water Departments for 15 years. He was a member of

Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, as well as the church’s Holy Name Society. He was the

treasurer of the Sacred Heart Credit Union for many years. He loved music, singing

and being around family and friends. Enrique is survived by his wife of 57 years

Antonia Pérez (née Semidey); son Henry A. Pérez and his wife Ellen Pérez (née

Teleha). He was preceded in death by his parents Julio and Josepha (née Martínez)

Pérez; his brother Ismael Pérez and his sister Josephita Flores.
 



TIMOTEO R. URRUTIA

Timoteo “Tim” R. Urrutia, age 94, of Toledo, OH, passed away at Hospice of Northwest Ohio Toledo Facility on November 19, 2008, surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband for 70 years, father, brother, uncle, cousin, grandfather, great-grand-father and great-great-grand-father, Tim’s life is a success story. Tim was born on January 24, 1914, in Martindale, Texas, to Rita (Rocha) and Valentine Urrutia. A migrant farmworker, of few words, brought his wife and children from Helena, Texas to Toledo during the mid 1940s, to work in the pickle fields of northwest Ohio. It was a time of change for Tim and his wife María, as they decided to settle out of the migrant stream and make Toledo their home. As an ambitious husband, father and provider, who spoke only Spanish, with a fifth grade education, he taught himself how to read and write English fluently. As a visionary, his goal was to leave the fields to provide the Urrutia family with security, and his children the opportunity for an education and a life outside of the migrant stream. Tim began working at Willy’s Jeep Corporation and retired after 30 years later, in 1976. Today, after more than 60 years in Toledo, his mark is firmly imprinted in the foundation of the Latino leadership. Tim’s journey has ended, but his memory remains through his family of five  generations. He is survived by his loving wife, María Hinojosa Urrutia; son, Michael J.

LINDA F. DIAZ

Linda F. Díaz, 54, of Hollywood, Fla., formerly of Lorain Ohio, was called to Heaven on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at Memorial Pembroke Hospital, Pembroke Pines, Fla., after a lengthy illness. She was born in Lorain on December 3, 1953, and moved to Hollywood, Florida in 1992. She was employed by Crooks Printing, Hollywood, Fla. for 13 Years. She enjoyed life to its fullest and spending time with her family. Survivors include: two brothers Frank Díaz of Hollywood Fla., James (Tina) of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; two nieces, Alyssia of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Tonya Harper of Louisville, Kentucky; two nephews, Jason Cancel and Louis Rosario Jr. both of Lorain, OH, and seven great nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved very much. She was preceded in death by her father Frank (Kiko) in 1992, her mother Mary (Chita) in 2007, and her sister Sandra in 2001.


DOMINGO PALOS

Domingo Palos, 79, of Lorain, OH, passed away Friday, November 14, 2004 in his home, with his family. He was born April 10, 1929 in Houston, Texas. He came to Lorain in 1943 and had been a resident since then. Mr. Palos retired in 1988 from the Blast Furnace of U. S. Steel, Lorain. He worked there for 30 Years. After his retirement, he became a self-employed landscaper. He was a member of Iglesia De Dios Pentecostal Ebenezer M. I., Lorain. He was a member of the United Steelworkers Union Local 1104 of Lorain. Mr. Palos enjoyed gardening, especially growing peppers and tomatoes. He liked to feed the squirrels and birds. He will be missed by his wife of 54 years, Sally Ann Palos (née Cantu), his sons Billy and Freddy Palos both of Elyria, Ronny Palos of Cleveland, Domingo and Tommy Palos both of Lorain and Clarence Palos of Arizona; daughters Sharon Ware, and Patty and Pricilla Palos all of Lorain; brothers Joseph Palos of Oberlin, and Ernesto and Eddy Palos both of Chicago; sisters Jessie Palos of Chicago, Juanita Palos of Puerto Rico and Analita Palos of Texas, 30 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Angel and Orica Palos, a son Johnny Palos, brothers Andres Palos and Phillip Palos, and a sister Mary Palos. 


ERINEO VILLARREAL
Erineo “Ed” Villarreal, age 84, of Toledo, passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at the Lake Park Nursing Facility, Sylvania, OH. He was born on April 12, 1924, in Bonami, LA, to José and María (Maldonado) Villarreal. Ed was employed as an inspector for Con Rail for 35 years, retiring in 1985. A parishioner of St. Clement Catholic Church in Toledo, he was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 197, and the Maumee Elks Lodge 1850. Ed enjoyed traveling, especially cruises. He also loved dancing, baseball, and spending time with his grand-children whom he adored. A loving husband, father, grand-father, and great-grandfather, he will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him. Ed is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Eleanor (Maciejewski) Villarreal (married Nov. 3, 1978); daughters, Rhonda (Joe) Tyburski, Becky (Chuck) Peters, Minerva (Juvenal) Garay, Mary Lou (Jim) Vanatta, and Margaret Borman; stepdaughters, Melody (Jim) Mexico and Janet Tarraf; 24 grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 12 step great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his brothers, Jesse, Sylvester, and Eliseo Villarreal, and granddaughter, Angela Rodela.


FRANCISCO J. FONTAÑEZ
Francisco J. Fontañez, 84 of Lorain, OH, died Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Community Health Partners Regional Medical Center in Lorain unexpectedly. Mr. Fontanez was born in Caguas, PR on December 3, 1923, the son of the late José Fontañez and Micaela Cruz. He has lived in Lorain for more than 50 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel in Lorain. He retired from the City of Lorain in 1984 following 25 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and cooking for his family.
He is survived by a son Francisco Fontanez (Marisol) of Carolina, PR. daughters: Carmen S Fontañez (Rafaél) of Caguas, PR, Margarita Fontañez of Lorain, Elizabeth “Liz” A Foley of Mint Hill, NC, Gisela R Hoffman (Rich) of Lorain, Ligia “Linda” I Darby (Trevor) of Lorain, Doreena D Fontañez of Lorain, Norma L Mulero (Manuel) of Mint Hill, NC, Nydia “Lydia” I Wyatt of Avon Lake, Doris Quiroz (Octavio “Tiny”) of Lorain, Rosalina “Cuqui” Rosado of Lorain, grandchildren: Francisco, Marla F., Rafaél Jr, Oscar, Javier, Jessica, Richard, Joshua, Steven, Devin, Wyatt, Elijah, Deborah, Betsy, Leticia, Charles, Marcus, Saundra, David, Melixa, and 16 great grandchildren.

Dolores Lozada (née Rivera), age 91, Cleveland, Ohio. Beloved wife of the late Ramón for 66 years; devoted mother of Cecilia Pagán, Rev. Mr. Frank (Fidela), Ramón (Shirley), Catalina Meléndez, Cruz (Thomas, deceased) Clemente, Dolores Acosta, Jesús A. (Oneida), and Mary Lozada; loving grandmother of 33, great grandmother of 71, and great-great grandmother of several. Dolores was the second youngest of 29.


JUSTINO VÁZQUEZ
Justino “Tino” Vázquez, 97, of Cleveland, OH, died Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at Malachi House following a lengthy illness. Born Sept. 14, 1911, in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico; Tino was one of the first Latinos to come to Lorain in 1946. He worked at Lorain Works US Steel as a fork lift operator in the pipe mill, retiring in 1974 after 25 years. Following his retirement, he returned to Puerto Rico, living in Juana Díaz until moving to Cleveland in 1986. He was a founding member of Templo Bethel, Lorain, and was currently a member and elder of the Sociedad de Caballeros, and member of the Hispanic Pentecostal Church in Cleveland. Tino was also a member of the United Steel Workers Union Local 1104 and enjoyed reading the bible, teaching bible school and gardening. Surviving are his sons, Victor of Orlando, Fla., Tony Cruz of Bay Village, and Benjamin of Lorain; a daughter, Monica Torres of Cleveland; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great-grandchildren; a brother, Enrique of Rochester, NY. He was preceded in death by his wife, Encarnación “Cachon” Cruz-Vázquez in 1986; and several brothers and sisters.


JORDAN ELISABETH GONZÁLEZ
Jordan Elisabeth González, 21, of Lorain, OH, died unexpectedly Friday at Fairview Hospital, Cleveland. She was born Nov. 16, 1986, in Elyria, and has lived in Lorain all her life. She graduated from Southview High School in 2005, and was studying Art at Lorain County Community College in Elyria. She was a talented singer and songwriter, performing regularly in N.E. Ohio. She was an avid guitar player and enjoyed co-writing songs with her father. She loved shopping, discovering new music, going to concerts, and had a great affinity for Nashville, Savannah, Ga., and the “South.” She was a member of Freedom House Church, Amherst. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and especially loved her nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her mother: Gloria (née Berlingeri) González of Lorain; her father: Paul González of Westlake; sister: Brittany González of Lorain; 3 brothers: Paul (Amy) González of Amherst, David González of Amherst, and Joshua González of Lorain; two nephews: Thaddaeus and Barak; four nieces: Jerund, Talia-Noelle, Brooklyn, and Noah; maternal grandfather: Miguel Berlingeri of Lorain; maternal grandmother: Herminia Berlingeri of Lorain; paternal grandfather: Jorge Rodríquez of Lorain. She was preceded in death by paternal grandmother: Crimilda Rodríquez.


ADOLFA MERCADO
Adolfa Mercado, 83, of Lorain, OH, died Friday, October 24, 2008, at Autumn Aegis Nursing Home, Lorain, following a lengthy illness. Born December 8, 1924, in Caguas, Puerto Rico, she came to Lorain in 1954. She was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, and the Cursillo Movement there. While living in Puerto Rico, she taught catechism.  Adolfo enjoyed knitting and sewing. Surviving are her sons, Ralph (Millie), Daniel (Monica), Martin Jr. (Debbie), Angel (Becky), Frank (Chrissy) and Antonio (Anna) all of Lorain; daughters, Gladys (Rudy) Hernández, Helen Mercado and Margie (Willie) Roldan, all of Lorain; 30 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Martin, in 1996; and 11 brothers and sisters.


HELEN V. RUIZ
Helen V. Ruiz, 80, of Sheffield Lake, OH, passed away Saturday, October 25, 2008, at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, following a lengthy illness. Born Oct. 17, 1928, in McComas, WV, she lived in Lorain before moving to Sheffield Lake in 1954. She was a member of The Haven non-denominational, Lorain. Helen had volunteered at the Salvation Army for 5 years and enjoyed bowling and ceramics. Surviving is her husband of 47 years, Eustacio; a daughter, Brenda Brannon of Sheffield Lake; 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; sisters, Etheline Goforth of Lorain, Shirley Alfano of Rock, WV, and Maxine King of Princeton, WV. She was preceded in death by son, Richard Allen Gills, in 1970; a daughter, Linda Lee Frame, in 1965; parents, Troy and Clara (née Peak) Lusk; and five brothers.


DAISY GONZÁLEZ
Daisy González 48 of Lorain, OH, died Monday, October 20, 2008, in her home following a lengthy illness. She was born November 17, 1959, in Lorain. She moved with her family to Pinellas Park in 1975 she returned to Lorain in 1977. She graduated from Southview High School in 1978. Daisy retired in 2004 as an assistant case worker for the Lorain County Family and Jobs Service. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church Lorain. She loved her cats. Daisy enjoyed Spanish and Jazz music. She liked to read and go to the movies. Daisy’s memory will be cherished by her family, including her father Manuel Antonio González of Elyria; brothers Manuel Antonio González, Jr. of Elyria, Freddy González of Lorain and David González of Saint Petersburg, Florida; sisters Leida González – Huey of Frisco, Texas, and Elsie García of Amherst Township and many nieces, nephews aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her mother Nereida “Nellie” González (née Figueroa) last year, and a sister Santita Figueroa González.


ROLDAN VAZQUEZ
Roldan Vázquez, 44 of Lorain, OH, died Sunday, October 19, 2008, in his home following a brief illness. He was born November 7, 1963, in Lorain. He was a life long resident. Roldan graduated from Southview High School in 1982. He was working for The Elyria Foundry Company as a grinder chipper. He played basketball on the Southview Saints team. He enjoyed being with his family. He will be missed by his sons Robert L. Vázquez-Rivas and Anthony Vázquez both of Lorain; his mother Laura E. Vázquez of Lorain; brothers Hercules “Teddy” and Enoch Vázquez both of Lorain; sisters Ada Lebron, Selinda “Sela” Vázquez-Ward and Lalila Vázquez all of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his father Teodoro Vázquez in 1999; sisters Dalia “Titi” Vázquez last year and an infant sister Dalila Vázquez in 1959.


CARMEN M. CORTES
Carmen M. Cortes, 54, of Lorain, OH, died Thursday, October 16, 2008 at Community Health Partners Regional Medical Center, following a heart attack while shopping. She was born November 27, 1953 in Utuado, Puerto Rico.  She came to Lorain in 1979. Carmen was a loving and caring mother who loved to spend time with her family and friends. She was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel. Carmen received a pancreas and kidney transplant in October 2006 and had been doing well since.
She will be missed by her daughters Carmen E., Viviana and Luiselle “Coco” Pérez all of Lorain; her brothers Berto Cortes of Boston, Guillo Cortes of Passaic, New Jersey, Papo, Freddy and Tony Cortes all of Lorain; sisters Gloria Cortes of Passaic, New Jersey, Glicy and Jeanette Cortes both of Utuado, Puerto Rico; and her grandchildren Ariana, Nelson, Nazaryah, and Derrick all of Lorain.  She was preceded in death by her parents Santos Cortes and Gloria Rivera and a sister Luz Denis Cortes.

Luis Rodríguez Delgado, 90, of Lorain, OH, died Friday, October 17, 2008 at Autumn Aegis Nursing Home, Lorain, following a lengthy illness. Born Feb 2, 1918 in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Luis was one amongst a group of 500 Puerto Ricans recruited to come to Lorain, in 1948 to work at Lorain Works U.S. Steel. His home became an essential stopping place for other Puerto Ricans that were to follow. Luis was very handy and mechanically minded. In the home, he repaired all that broke. He passed these skills on to his offspring. He tried very hard to give his family a good life. After retiring from U.S. Steel he returned to his place of birth, Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. From high atop the mountain where he lived he could see the Puerto Rican coastline and the Caribbean Sea. His property was abundant with tropical birds and foliage which he very much enjoyed. There he worked the land and grew platanos, guineos verdes, and malanga among other roots and vegetables. Besides gardening, he also enjoyed fishing. Every day after lunch he would take his nap on his favorite hamaca. He was a devout Christian and would read the Holy Scriptures on a daily basis. He was a member of Templo Bethel in Lorain.  His life slowed down some after falling from a Pana Tree at the age of 78. Surviving are his loving children, Angel Luis Delgado, Thomas Delgado, Joseph Delgado, Mary I. Díaz, and Dolores Hamilton all of Lorain; 14 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 4 great great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro Delgado and Dolores Rodríguez; 6 brothers, 4 sisters and a grandson.


STANLEY B. LUCIO
Stanley Lucio, age 77, of Toledo passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 16, 2008, in his home surrounded by his loving family. Stanley was born in San Antonio, TX on October 30, 1930, to Robert and Bertha (Bazan) Lucio. He married Mary Sarabia in Toledo on August 31, 1950. A self-employed painter, Stanley will always be remembered as a devoted family man and his warmth and kindness toward neighbors and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Surviving is his loving wife of 58 years, Mary; children, Martha (Larry) Thebeau of Toledo, Elizabeth (Greg) Hale of New Baltimore, MI, Stanley (Vickie) Lucio Jr. of Sylvania, Andrew (Debra) Lucio of Ocala, FL, Roseana (Steve) Riley of Defiance, Randolph Lucio of Toledo, Daniel Lucio of Hillsdale, MI, Diana Lucio of Toledo; 25 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; brother, Steve (Bonnie) Lucio of Toledo; sisters, Carmen (John) Sturt of Sylvania; and Vera Clark of Bowling Green, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Bertha; 2 brothers; 2 sisters; grandsons, Sy and Daniel Lucio and granddaughter, Clarissa Kneisley.


MICHAEL JOSEPH PLASENCIO
Michael Joseph Plasencio, 67, of Oregon, OH, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2008. He was born on January 29, 1941, to Augustine and Isabelle (née Rodríguez) Plasencio in Toledo, OH. He was a conductor for CSX Railroad for 40 years, an avid comic book collector and enjoyed watching movies, listening to music, and playing his trumpet. Survivors include his brothers, Robert (Elvira) Plasencio, Richard (Linda) Plasencio; sisters, Ann (Carlos) Castaneda, Carmelita Duran, Mary Rose (Tony) Silva, Dolores (Richard) Tramil, Veronica (Frank) Villarreal, Loretta Alonzo and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to extend a special thanks to aunt, Susan and uncle, Israel Hernández, for the love and support they extended to Michael over the years. Preceding Michael in death were his parents and sister, Rita Dickens, in 2007.


TRINIDAD M. APODACA
Trina Apodaca, age 67, of South Toledo, died Sunday morning, October 12, 2008, surrounded by family and friends, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on South Detroit Ave. Trina was born on July 6, 1941 to Walter and Ruth (Nino) Quiroga in Toledo, Ohio. She was a graduate of Whitney Vocational High School. Trina loved spending her free time with family. She was a great cook and her Sunday dinners were the highlight of the week for the family. The highlight of the year was her Christmas parties featuring her homemade tamales and Christmas carols. Trina was the biggest fan while attending her children and grandchildren's activities, which she rarely missed. Trina enjoyed the many years she played Bunco with her “Bunco-gals.” She also enjoyed going to concerts, movies, Mud Hen games, and finding a good bargain when she was out shopping with her girls. Trina was a dedicated employee of St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center for over 40 years as a surgical technician. She considered her co-workers her second family. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. She is survived by her loving husband, Rudy Apodaca, children, Louis (Karen) Apodaca, Laura Good, Sheila Apodaca, Philip (Celia) Apodaca; grandchildren, Nicole Apodaca, Matthew Handy, Alicia Marie Good, Loni Good, Philip Apodaca, Valerie Apodaca, Samantha Apodaca, Porter Apodaca, Jessica Lee, Jenna Meyers, and great-grandchildren, Kaili, Eric, Rudy and Aidan. Jimmy R. Partin Avalos Jr., passed away suddenly on Friday, October 10, 2008, with family at home. Jimmy loved the Lord and he was a very loving person to everyone. He worked at the Ziegler home. He is survived by mother, Eriselda Avalos; sisters, Christy, Jennifer, Diana; brother, Robert Avalos; 6 nieces; 6 nephews; grandparents; many aunts, uncles and cousins. JESSE B. ESCOBEDO
Jesse B. (Chuy) Escobedo, 80, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesús and Atanacia Escobedo; sister, Antonia Campos, and granddaughter, Katherine Escobedo. Jesse was a Navy veteran and a life long member of the American GI Forum. He was also a member of the Cursillos. Jesse leaves behind to cherish his memories, his wife of 57 years, Herlinda Mireles; one daughter, Esther (Jerry) Wiggens; sons, Jesse A. Escobedo, Luis J. (Angie) Escobedo, Eli Escobedo, David (Angie) Escobedo and Ira O. (Tori) Escobedo. RAMÓN L. GUTIÉRREZ
Ramón “Ray” L. Gutiérrez, age 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, October 12, 2008, at the West Toledo Health Care Center. Ray was born on May 28, 1924 in Comfort, TX. He worked construction for the Fred W. Bostleman Corp. for 24 years retiring in 1984. Ray a member of Local 500 was a dedicated and hard worker. A lifetime member of the VFW Post 3925 in Erie, Michigan where he worked bingo and various social events. His favorite hobbies included golf, bowling, playing cards, and going to the horse races. Ray's pride and joy was his family and especially his grand children and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Tillie (Soto) Gutiérrez; sons, Raymond (Carol) of Rossford, Robert (Linda) of Toledo, Terry (Patricia) Gutiérrez of Toledo; daughter, Virginia (Mike) Gladieux of Perrysburg; brother, Alex (Ramóna) Gutiérrez, Alvaro (Olivia) Gutiérrez; grandchildren, Kirsten, Courtney, Kristopher, Cheryl, Julie, Bobby, Ryan, Melissa, Mia, Michaela, Alex; great grandchildren, Kira, Hunter, Tessa, Ian, Hannah and a blessing on the way, Keegan, and many nieces and nephews. HECTOR E. MESAS-BORRERO
Hector E. Mesas-Borrero, 59, of Lorain, OH, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at the Metro Health Medical Center in Cleveland. He was born March 19, 1949, in Puerto Rico and had lived in the Lorain area since 1989. He attended the Salvation Army Church on Broadway in Lorain. He served with the U.S. Army and was a member of the VFW and Disabled American Veteran. Hector loved musical instruments, including keyboards, guitar, flute, maracas, and the congo and bongo drums. He also enjoyed weight lifting, boxing and held a martial arts black belt. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Noemi Mesas (née Morales); children, Brenda Mesas, Glenda Mesas, Jessi Mesas, Hector “Joel” Mesas, María Mesas, and Adela Mesas, all of Lorain, Hendy Mesas of Puerto Rico, Yanitza Mesas and Hector “Tito” A. Mesas of Boston, Mass., stepchildren, Madelyn Ortiz of Cleveland, Catheryn Morales and Angelica Morales, both of Lorain; mother, María V. Borrero of Puerto Rico; brothers, Luis H. Mesas and José A. Peña, both of Puerto Rico; sisters, Rosa Idalia Del Valle and Rosa María Del Valle, both of Puerto Rico; 7 grandchildren; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. RAMÓN SEVILLA
Ramón Sevilla, 59, of Toledo, Ohio went to the “Spirit in the Sky” on October 10, 2008, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Allende, Jalisco, México on February 21, 1949, to Pedro and Socorro (Camerena) Sevilla. Ramón was a U.S. Marine Corp. veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a 1969 Waite High School Graduate. Ramón had been employed as a sheet metal journeyman by Local #33, working at VM Systems before retiring after 31 years of service. He was a member of A.A. and St. Mark Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday school and catechism. Ramón loved astronomy and making paper airplanes, gardening, fishing, and camping. Surviving is his wife, Kyle (Bee); daughters, Socorro (Daniel Kruse) Sevilla and Elena Sevilla; sons, Andrew (Jana) and Robert (Courtney) Sevilla; mother-in-law, Judy “Queen” Bee; grandchildren, Javier and Aiden Sevilla; brother, Juan Camerena; sisters, Socorro Almaguer and Juanita Sevilla. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Micaela Sevilla and sisters, Alicia Lozano and Esperanza Sevilla; brother, Poncho Sevilla.


EUSEBIO LÓPEZ 
Eusebio “Joe” López, 84, of Toledo, OH, passed away October 8, 2008, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. He was born in Laredo, Texas on August 14, 1924, to Miguel and Filomena (Cardenas) López. Joe was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving during World War II, and retired from General Motors in 1990 after 21 years. He was a member of St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Surviving are his wife, Eufracia “Effie;” stepson, José T. (Linda) Ramos Jr.; stepdaughter, Irma (Manuel) Hernández; brothers, Thomas and Raymond López; nephew, Tom (Colleen) López; 17 step grandchildren and 27 great step grandchildren; best friend, Alice Meier. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, and 1 brother.


TERESA GUARDIOLA
Teresa Guardiola, age 94, of Toledo, OH, died Saturday, October 4, 2008, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio-Toledo, surrounded by her family and friends. Teresa was born October 15, 1913, in Torreón, Coahuila, México, where she was raised by her parents, Secunoino and Porfria Puga. She was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Church until it closed. Teresa loved her family and her flower garden very much and she personally tended to both until the last few months. Surviving are her loving children, Cirilo (Tina) Guardiola, Margie Garza, Carmen Soto, Martha Vargas, Irma Guardiola and Ofilia Grince; sisters, Paula Guardiola and María (Juan) Mancilla. Also surviving are many grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Teresa was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Adolfo; her children, Francisco Guardiola, Frank Guardiola, Amilia Mendes, Guadalupe Guardiola and Domingo Guardiola and her sister, Luis Silva.



ANTONIA SANTIAGO
Antonia Santiago (née Rosario), 89 of Lorain, OH, died Tuesday, September 30, 2008, in her home surrounded by her family. She was born August 12, 1919, in Caguas, Puerto Rico. She came to Lorain in 1952. Mrs. Santiago was a homemaker and mother, who was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain. She enjoyed gardening and cooking. She was a loyal friend and a loving mother and grandmother. She will be deeply missed by her family, including her sons Carlos (Norma) and Tomas (Kinue) Santiago both of Lorain, Alfonso (Mary Lou) Santiago of Pontiac, Mich., and José Santiago of Seffner, Fla.; daughters Carmen Delgado, Sylvia “Cindy”(Wilfredo) Martínez and Rosa Santiago all of Lorain, and Ana Miranda of Oberlin and Lydia (Grant) Ely of Avon Lake; brother José Rosario of Hobart, IN; sisters Francisca Moyet and Carmen Reyes both of Auburn Hills, Mich. and Bernarda Arroyo of Caguas; 24 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Tomás Santiago in 2002, her parents Alberto and Tomasa (née Rodríguez) Rosario, a granddaughter Wendy Mateo in 2006 and 11 brothers and sisters.


SILVERIO MORA
Silverio Mora, born December 5, 1960, passed September 30, 2008, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He worked as a security guard for several years. He was a huge fan of Ohio State University and the Dallas Cowboys. He is survived by wife, Norma; brothers, Valentine Jr. (Anita), Isidro, Carlos Mora; sisters, Manuela (Stanley) Murphy, Juanita, Delfina Mora; children, Silverio Jr., Patricia Mora, Alonso (Tino), Sylvia Mora (Jason Baker), Rebecca, Anthony, Manuela Mora; stepchildren, Sonia (Reynaldo) Vina, José González; nine grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.


HELEN S. MARTÍNEZ
Helen S. Martínez, 81, of Wauseon, OH, passed away late Thursday, September 18, 2008, at Hospice of Perrysburg. Prior to her retirement she worked for Fulton Tubing in Archbold. Her life may be over but her legacy lives on through her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Martínez was born on May 10, 1927, in Gary, IN, the daughter of the late Rudolfo and the late María Santos. She married Gilberto Martínez and he preceded her in death in 1965. She was a member of St. Caspar Catholic Church in Wauseon. Surviving are three sons, Gilberto (Joan) Martínez of Toledo, Juan Martínez, Antonio (Theresa) Martínez of Northwood, OH; three daughters, Elodia (John) Price of Novi, MI, Rebecca (Martin) Blunt of Monroe, MI, Irene Martínez of Wauseon; 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grand-children. Also surviving are two brothers, Rodolfo and Manuel Santos.


QUERINO ESPINO  
Querino Espino, age 35, passed away Friday, September 12, 2008, in the University of Toledo Medical Center. He was born in Carrizo Springs, TX, on May 17, 1973, to Querino Reyna and Elba Espino. Querino moved to Toledo in 1973 and went on to graduate from Woodward High School where he played football. After high school, Querino enlisted for four years as a U.S. Marine. He was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal and served in Somolia. After being honorably discharged from the USMC, Querino attended the law enforcement program at Owens College and began working with the Lucas County Sheriff's Department, first as a corrections officer, then as a Deputy Sheriff. He was a loving father, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend to many. Querino coached baseball and football, played video games, and enjoyed all sports. He was an enthusiastic fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Lakers and his fantasy football league. Querino is survived by his mother, Elba C Espino; father, Querino Reyna; daughter, Angil Espino; sons, Querino, Paul, and Anthony Espino, and Shane Dempsey; brothers, Steven and Luis (Amber) Espino; grandparents, Josie Reyna and special grandfather, Alonzo Morales. Also surviving is a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends. Preceding Querino in death are his grandma, Brigida Morales; grandpas, Guadalupe Reyna and Manuel Espino.


JESSIE M. URBINA
Jessie M. Urbina, age 76, of Toledo, OH, passed away on Saturday, September 13, 2008, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in New Braunfels, Texas on April 8, 1932, to Demencio and Josphina Urbina. Jessie was employed as a crane operator, most recently with Northwestern Ohio Steel for 24 years, retiring in the 1980s. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. Jessie was the last of the “true prize fighters,” often times using his winnings to buy food for his siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wonderful wife whom he adored, Muriel Urbina; siblings, Tommy Urbina, George Urbina, Leonard Urbina. Jessie is survived by his devoted children, Tom (Shirley) Urbina, Santos Urbina, Lorraine (David) Marks, Luann (Earl) Correa, Jeanette (Gary) Krupinski, Muriel Urbina, Cathy Mitchell; siblings, John (Lupe) Urbina, Santos (Delores) Urbina, Vicky (Raymond) Vidalez, Lucy (Bob) Casper, Mary Urbina; 41 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.


MICHAEL F. JILEK

Michael F. Jilek passed away on Sunday, September 7th, 2008, at his home. Mike was born in Cleveland, OH, September 6th, 1941. Mike graduated from Cathedral Latin School (Cleveland Ohio) in 1959. His faith led him to the University of Dayton where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1964. Mike concluded his formal education by obtaining a graduate degree in Law from the University of Toledo in 1969. Upon beginning his life in Toledo, Mike worked for the Traveler's Insurance Company as an adjuster. He spent the first 7 years of his legal career with Cubbon and Rice where he developed his skills as a Trial Lawyer. In 1978, Mike became a founding member of a new law firm which was named Goldberg, Williams, Jilek, and Lafferty (later Williams, Jilek, Lafferty, Gallagher, & Scott) and practiced law, successfully, with his friends for nearly another 30 years. Mike enjoyed the practice of law and always represented his clients with honesty, compassion, integrity, courage and with hard work. Mike continued trying cases, successfully, until the day he retired. Throughout his career, Mike was active in many professional organizations. As a result of his commitment to the practice of law (and due to the fact that everyone he met enjoyed his company), Mike was elected to be the President of the Toledo Bar Association in 1991, his crowning professional achievement, and was just recently awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Toledo College of Law. After his retirement, Mike dedicated his free time to helping others. On most mornings during his retirement, Mike could be found serving communion to individuals at The Toledo Hospital or his beloved church, Christ the King. He spent the rest of his time providing services and assistance to those in need at the Little Sisters of the Poor and through the Toledo Bar Association. Mike was a gifted conversationalist, was generous in all respects and was above all a kind man. He will be greatly missed. “In a world dominated by takers, Mike was a giver, he gave back to his family, friends, profession, and church. He was the kindest most gentle man I have ever met,” said Jon A. Lafferty. He was survived by his loving wife, Jackie; children, Ashleigh, Scott, Michael, Christine, Patrick; grandchildren, Benjamin, Abigail, Erica, Alexandra, Kristen; mother, Angela Jilek; brother, William Jilek.


REV. DEACON PRUDO MUÑOZ VICENS
Rev. Deacon Prudo Muñoz Vicens, age 88, of Lorain, OH, died on September 11, 2008 at his home, after an extended illness of heart disease. He was born on June 10, 1920 in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, moving to Lorain 56 years ago. Prudo was a devoted Catholic who, after raising his 18 children, was ordained a Deacon of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland in 1986. He carried out his ministry at Sacred Heart Chapel.  He belonged to various church organizations, including the Cursillo Movement, and taught Bible Class.  He was also employed at Ford Motor Company in Brook Park in the Engine Foundry for 27 years before retiring in 1979. He will also be remembered as being an avid Dominoes player.  He also enjoyed playing cards and being a Cleveland Indians fan. Though he led a busy life, he was the father of 18 children, who always received the full measure of his love and he still found time to feed and clothe the needy of his community through his work with the St. Vincent dePaul Society.
Prudo is the beloved husband of 68 years, to Otilia (née Vallejo).  He is also survived by his sons; Juan (Nora) and José (Elba), all of Lorain, Isaias (Minda), of Escondido, CA, Ismael (Betsy), of Old Bridge, NJ, William (Gloria), of Lorain, Frederico, of Winston-Salem, NC, Antonio, of Lorain, Martin (Cathy), King, NC, and Jaime (Kim), of Lorain, his daughters; Carmen (Carl) Ragnoni, Juanita Magdaleno, Hilda (Johnny) Muñoz, all of Lorain, María (Vince) Gutiérrez, of Rochester, MN, Esther (Adrian) Colón, of Lorain, Margaret (Rodel) Cuenca, of Temecula, CA, Teresa (José) Ayala, of New Bern, NC, Antonia (Freddy) Pedroza, of Hillsborough, NC, and Rosie (Joseph) Bridges, of Knightdale, NC.  He is also survived by his 45 grandchildren and 46 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by 4 grandchildren; Freddy Burnett, Briana Marie Harris, Kelly Vicens, and Johnny Vicens, Jr., along with 7 brothers and sisters, and his parents; Natalio and Adela (née Muñoz) Vicens.


ODILIA R. GARCÍA-LINARES
Odilia R. García-Linares, 86, of Oregon, OH, passed away Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at Heartland of Oregon. She was born in Congregación de Rodríguez, Coahuila, México on April 13, 1922 to Melquiades Rodríguez Martínez and Santos Elizondo Costilla. She became a naturalized U.S. citzen in 1984. Odilia was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. In her spare time you would find Odilia attending to her many flower gardens or in her kitchen cooking traditional Mexican foods for her family. She was very talented at crocheting and embroidering. Her real love was spending time with her family, especially providing care for many of her grandchildren. Surviving are her sons, Luis (Teresa) Linares, Daniel (Christine) Linares, Dr. Antonio (Martha) Linares, Pedro García, Santos (Tina) García; daughter, Josefina (José Treviño) García; 15 grandchildren; sisters, Aurelia Menchaca and Guadalupe Martínez, both of Texas, Carlota Bustos and brother, Ramón González, both of México. Odilia was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Francisco Linares; brothers, Melquiades, Rogelio, Ramiro, Abel, and Eliodoro; sisters, Rosa Elia and Herminia.


SIMON C. MARTÍNEZ SR.
Simon C. Martínez Sr. was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 1, 2008. He was born in Toledo, OH on January 5, 1955 to Eusebio and Concepción Martínez. Known to everyone as “Si Superfly” he was a humorous person who was always considered to be the life of the party. He leaves to cherish his memory, children, Tony, Monica, Simon Jr., Daniel, Felicia, Bianca, Santos, Eusebio, Emilio, and Enrique; grandchildren, Juliana, Richard, Simon III, Elena, Mya, Amaris, Santos Jr., Josiah and Vincente; sisters, Balbina (Tomas) Ruiz, Sabina (Martin) Elizondo, Margaret (Ed) Ruiz, Suzie Balderas, Lupe Martínez-Jaso, Cuca; brothers, Thomas, Carl, Hank, José and Juan (Carole) Martínez. Simon was preceded in death by his loving parents, Eusebio and Concepción Martínez and nieces, Gloria Ruiz, and April Martínez.


FELIX ANTHONY ORTIZ
Felix Anthony Ortiz, 5 month old son of Felix Ortiz and Nicole Gonzalez of Lorain, OH, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 at his residence. Felix was born March 23, 2008 in Lorain. He is survived by his maternal grandparents, Angel and Virginia González of Lorain; Maternal great grandparents, José and Carmen González of Lorain, and Clara Barela of Pheonix, Ariz.; paternal grandparents, Carmen Martínez, and Carmen Ortiz both of Lorain; godparents, Nina Riggins and Joshua Vargas both of Lorain; and many aunts and uncles, and little cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal great grandfather, Jim Archuleta; paternal great grandfathers, Felix Rodríguez, and Luis Robert DeJesús; paternal great grandmother, Gloria Cruz; and a cousin, Elijah S. Riggins in 2002.


ANTONLINA R. PEREZ
Antolina R. Pérez, 74, of San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center, Lorain, OH, following a short illness. She was born April 1, 1934, in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, coming to Lorain in 1953 where she lived until returning to San Lorenzo in 1983. While living in Lorain, she was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel. Antolina was a professional seamstress when she was younger and enjoyed sewing and cooking.
Surviving is her husband of 55 years, Pablo; daughters Judie Díaz of Lorain, Daisy Rosario of Riverside, Calif., Lourdes Rodríguez of San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, and Peggy Silver of Seattle; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Avelina Ruiz of Guayama, Puerto Rico. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cecillo and Lorenza Ruiz; three brothers; and three sisters. Funeral services took place in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico.


STEFEN W. SALO
Stefen W. Salo, 16, passed away unexpectedly at University Hospital in Cleveland on Saturday, August 30, 2008. He is survived by his mother, Lori (Andrew) Laidlaw; father, Alex López, stepfather Michael Night, Grandparents Lily & Juventino López Jr. and numerous members of the Salo, Jordan, and López families as well as countless friends. Stefen was preceded in death by his grandmother, Thelma Jordan and grandfather, Wayne Salo. Stefen's interests included computers, music, skate boarding, Anime and video games, becoming especially adept at Rock Star. His listening ability and knowing exactly the right thing to say to make you laugh will be greatly missed by his family and friends.


CARMEN SALAZAR
Carmen Salazar (née Gonzáles), 80, of Toledo, OH, passed away, Saturday, September 6, 2008, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg surrounded by her loving family. She was born August 28, 1928, to Augustine and Julia Gonzáles in Cucaniro, Michoacan, Mexico. At age 18, Carmen moved to the United States to be with her father and for several years she worked for the St. Anthony's Orphanage. Carmen was a long-time active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, who enjoyed music, cooking, sewing, and especially dancing and traveling with her loving husband of 60 years, Lorenzo. She and Lorenzo were also active members of the YMCA for over 26 years where she found great joy in swimming. Carmen cared deeply for her family and enjoyed being with her grandchildren. She is survived by her loving husband, Lorenzo; daughter, Chris Salazar and friend, Tracy; sons, Raymond and Lorenzo (Debbie) Salazar; and grandchildren, Sean, Alexis, and Lauren Salazar. Carmen was preceded in death by her parents.


JUAN D. TORRES
Juan D. Torres, Sr. 63 of Lorain, OH, died Sunday, September 6, 2008, in University Hospital, Cleveland following a brief illness. He was born June 24, 1945, in Lares, Puerto Rico. He was a resident since coming here as a child. Mr. Torres retired as a cook in January of this year from ARAMARK in Brook Park. He worked there for 30 years.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain. He enjoyed playing pool, working on cars, cooking Spanish food. He loved to spend time with his family and friends. He will be missed by his wife Marilyn (née Hall) Torres of Lorain, sons Juan Domingo Luciano (Jessica) Torres, Jr., of Grande Prairie, Texas, Francisco M.(Megan) Torres of Lorain and Robert G. Hall of Lorain, daughters Mary L. (David) Cortes of Lorain and Wanda (William) Plato of Spencer, WV; mother Theresa Torres of Lorain; brothers Wilfredo Torres of Lorain and Joseph Torres of Cleveland; sisters Carmen Rivera, Frances Torres, Bienvenida Santiago all of Lorain, Nilda Rau of Deerfield, Mich., Elizabeth Quinnoies of Columbia Station and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father Francisco L. Torres and a brother Oscar Torres.


NICACIO GARCÍA
Nicacio García, 49, of Ottawa, OH, died 12:36 p.m. Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at St. Rita's Putnam County Ambulatory Care Center, Glandorf. He was born December 15, 1958, in La Mora, Mexico to the late Elias and Consuello (Sanson) García. In February 1979, he married Felisa Ramirez, who survives in Ottawa. Also surviving are two sons, Nicacio García Jr. of Ottawa and José Elias García at home; two daughters, Imelda García and Claudia García, both at home; five grandchildren, Samiyah and Aaliyah García, Alazae Greve, and Rhianna and Noah Moreno; sisters and brothers, María Asunsión, and Juan, Francisco, Jovelina, María, Josefina, Elias, Isidro, Maximiliano, Martin, and Mario García. Mr. García was a maintenance supervisor for Hirzel Canning Co., Ottawa, and also worked for Golden Corral, Findlay. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa. He loved music and spending time with his family. He enjoyed selling merchandise at the Fremont Flee Market.


BENITO PERALES SR.
 

Benito “Bennie” Perales Sr., 79, of Toledo, OH, passed away peacefully, surrounded by familia y amigos, in his home on August 29, 2008. Benito was one of seven children born to Angelita and Francisco Perales on April 3, 1929, in Primera, Texas.

 

Benito was a golden gloves boxer from 1948 - 1951. He had a total of 105 boxing matches. In 1952, he wed Lucia Martínez. They were married for 56 happy years and had four children. Benito worked for the LOF Glass Company for 42 years, before retiring in 1991.

 

Benito was an active member in the Latino community. He was the founder and president of the Mexican American Patriotic Association. He owned Perales Trucking, and helped build Interstate-75.

 

He, along with his wife Lucia, owned and operated Perales Restaurant on Main Street in East Toledo (photo on cover). Lucia was la cocinera tremenda.

 

Benito enjoyed music and dancing. He formed the Mexican bands of: Los Alegres del Norte, La Orchestra Perales, and Conjunto Perales. Benito was a dance and concert promoter of Tejano music, hosting many of the events at the former Sports Arena or its Annex in East Toledo.

 

He managed Los Charros del Norte, a Mexican-American folkloric dance group and Los Imperials Mariachis. The folkloric dance group was later continued by his daughter Lu Lu.

 

Benito was a loving and supporting husband, father, and grandfather. He was always there with a helping hand and a listening ear.

 

He was loved and will be missed by many. Benito is survived by his wife, Lucia; sons, Bennie Jr. (Blanca) and Francisco; daughters, Lucy “Lu Lu” Perales and Margaret (Robert) Layne; brothers, Benjamin (Evangeline) and Alberto; sister, Erlinda Alvarado; sister-in-law, Virginia Perales; brother-in-law, José Montalvo Sr.; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alfredo, and Francisco, and sister, Theresa Montalvo.

 


JUAN D. GONZÁLES
Juan D. “Johnny” Gonzáles, 50, of Toledo, OH, entered eternal rest on July 29, 2008. Johnny graduated from Scott High School in 1976. Johnny lived a long time of illness. He was preceded in death by his mother, Esperanza Gonzáles; brothers, Raymond and Freddie Gonzáles. Surviving are his father, Raymond Sr. (Sarah); children, Vickie Williams, Tyesha (Damion) Townsend, Nishelle Gonzáles and Juan Gonzáles Jr.; 7 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; brothers, Ricky, Louis (Hope) Gonzáles and sisters, Mary (Rodney) Cole and Joanne Gonzáles.


ISABEL MARÍA MURPHY-AGUILAR
Isabel María Murphy-Aguilar, age 60, of Lorain, OH, died on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Community Health Partners West, following a brief illness. She was born on January 13, 1948 in Hatillo, Puerto Rico. She lived most of her life in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, New York, until moving to Lorain 4 years ago to be with her eldest daughter. Isabel was the family matriarch. She enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and anyone else who needed help.
She is survived by her daughters María I. Quiñones-Murphy, of Lorain, Barbara González-Murphy, and Sandy Janet Murphy, both of Brooklyn, New York, grandchildren, Eric A. Quiñones, Desiree A. Quiñones, Adrian J. Quiñones, Jason M. González, Gabrielle A. González, Justin A. González, Sierra A. González and Joseph A. Ortiz, 1 brother, 1 sister, nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents Teodoro Aguilar and María (née Tejera) Aguilar, 2 sisters, 1 brother and a nephew.


CRISPIN DE LUNA
Crispin “Pipe” DeLuna, 61, of Toledo, OH, passed away August 12, 2008, at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. He was born in San Antonio, Texas on October 25, 1946, to Timoteo DeLuna and Victoria Machado. Crispin had been employed as a Union construction worker in the Detroit area for many years. He had a big heart and enjoyed entertaining his family and friends. Crispin enjoyed fishing and loved his dogs. Surviving are his wife, Yolanda; son, Gilberto DeLuna; daughters, María (Josh Potter) DeLuna, Elena DeLuna and Jessica Morales; brother, Enrique (Olivia) Quezada; 10 grandchildren. Crispin was preceded in death by his parents.


AGUSTIN GONZÁLES
Agustin Gonzáles, age 55, of Toledo, OH, passed away August 10, 2008, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio Perrysburg. Born August 19, 1952 in Greenville, Ohio to Charles and Adela Gonzáles. Agustin was a cook at Harborside of Sylvania and various other nursing homes in the Toledo area. Agustin was a graduate of Northview High School. Agustin was preceded in death by both of his parents. Surviving are his sisters, Jane Vásquez, Concepción Gonzáles, María (Jimmy) Gonzáles, Diana Saunders, Brothers, Lorenzo (Thelma) Gonzáles, Reynaldo (Dawn) Gonzáles, Leandro Gonzáles, Estevan Gonzáles, also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.


FATIMA PÉREZ GONZÁLEZ
Fatima Pérez González of Toledo, OH was born of a military father; discipline and hard work were in her blood. A connoisseur of many trades, Fatima helped her people while working for the Department of Immigration; her community while with the Toledo Police Department and the future of this world, the children while at Toledo Public Schools and Faith Lutheran Church as a volunteer for child care. A self educated, Godly and extremely beautiful inside and out woman - the true definition of a lady. She loyally worked side by side with her husband, Rubén and children, Ruby, Kiki and Jay Jay at Rubén and Son for more than 10 years. Family was always the most important value to her and she could not have contributed more to her family. She gave her life, her love and wisdom to all that she met and knew. She passed away on Saturday, August 9, 2008, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo. Survived by her husband, Rubén González Sr.; son, Rubén (Doni Marie) González Jr.; daughters, Monica (José) González of Toledo and Jessica F. (Ulysses) González of CA; 5 grandchildren; brothers, Jesse (Rita) Pérez, John Pérez, Loncio Pérez and Cookie (Jessica) Pérez; sisters, Romelia (Armando) Herrera, Janet Torres, Linda (Hector) Herrera, Thaimi (José) Ruiz and Nancy “Nanny Goat” (John) Sroga. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Manuel Pérez Jr., Galdino Pérez, Gaston Pérez and Raúl Pérez; sister, Clemintine Pérez.


ANGEL M. HERNÁNDEZ
Angel M. Hernández, 66, of Elyria Passed away Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, at New Life Hospice of St. Joseph in Lorain, OH following a brief illness. He was born in Puerto Rico on April 28, 1941, and had been a resident of Elyria for 38 years. Angel was employed as a machine operator for Invacare in Elyria. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in the 101st Airborne as a paratrooper. He enjoyed gardening, taking care of wildlife, especially birds, and spending time with his family. Angel was an avid Cleveland sports fan and especially enjoyed the Cleveland Indians. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Dorothy Sue (née Arthur); sons, Duane Hernández of Cape Coral, Fla., and John Hernández of Elyria; granddaughter, Samantha; great-granddaughter, Aaliyah; sisters, Alicia Smolen and Margie, both of Cleveland, and Elizabeth Rivera, Brunilda Hernández and Miguelina Hernández, all of Puerto Rico; and brothers, José Hernández and Sammy, both of N.Y., Benjamin Hernández of Mass. and Miguel Hernández Jr. of N.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, Miguel and Marcella (née Vega) Hernández.
