2007 Dia de la Mujer
Conference: “Madres De La Causa”
E. Lansing: The Latino community has
developed a sophisticated infrastructure of resources in Michigan
as a process of mediating its social, cultural, economic and
political issues.
El Dia de la Mujer (DDLM) conference
is one particular event that comes up every year as part of the
community strategy to focus on Latinas’ current challenges and
solutions.
For the last 13 years, several
hundreds of people have made it a practice to participate each
year on a full day of activities the conference has to offer.
Although aimed at the education of all people, regardless of
gender or ethnicity, DDLM is designed from a Latina perspective
based on particular needs and characteristics of Latinas.
DDLM is “By now an institution where
Latina women come together to network, celebrate successes, share
information, and discuss issues of concern,” says Felicitas
Moreno, Enrollment Services Assistant and 2007 Conference Chair.
DDLM is a day of workshops, exhibits,
and entertainment focusing on La Mujer—the personal, professional,
political, and academic aspects.
“Most important, it is an opportunity
to meet with other women who believe in the values of community
building and positive interaction,” said Moreno.
The richness of culture and traditions
among Latinos yields the importance of women in the development of
the family, community and other institutions.
This year DDLM’s theme as “Madres de
la Causa,” says Diana Rivera, Director if the César Chávez
Collection in the Michigan State University Library and member of
Steering Committee for DDLM. “Throughout the many of our
accomplishments as people, we can not overlook the importance of
our Mothers and Grandmothers’ participation,” she concluded.
Keynote Speaker for 2007 DDLM is Terry
Beltran-Miller, who is President and CEO of a Latina marketing
company, Vista Latinos. She currently is President for the
National Society of Hispanic MBA’s -Detroit Chapter.
A MSU graduate, Beltrán-Miller is a
senior marketing professional with over 16 years of experience and
an MBA in Marketing and Management. She has experience with
multicultural marketing for Latinas, youth, mobility, and other
international markets, as well as for the general U.S.
marketplace. Areas of expertise include integrated marketing plan
development and execution, sales programs, strategic planning,
advertising, direct marketing, customer relationship management
entertainment marketing, sponsorships and promotions,
