Stephanie ha estado envuelta en el Centro PHCA por un largo
tiempo, “prácticamente aquí crecí”, dijo a La Prensa.
Ella recuerda cuando era niña y pasaba las tardes allí, después
de la escuela. “Este es el barrio donde mis abuelos vivían y
donde nos quedábamos para que ellos nos cuiden”, recordó.
El Centro PHCA fue creado por Anita Sánchez- Serda, Sra.
Ramírez y la Sra. Cárdenas, quienes ante la preocupación de
la incidencia del fracaso escolar de la zona y las limitaciones
en la educación, decidieron juntar fuerzas y comenzar este
proyecto. En sus comienzos, el Centro PHCA estaba localizado en
un trailer y en 1996 construyó el edificio donde aun funciona,
añadiendo estructuras durante estos años de funcionamiento.
Actualmente, el Centro PHCA da apoyo escolar a niños de kinder
al grado 12 de las escuelas de la zona. Cuenta con voluntarios,
trabajadores de AmeriCorp y tutores de la Universidad de Bowling
Green (BGSU).
Los miércoles por la tarde de 6:30 a 8:30 ofrecen una clínica
médica gratuita proporcionada por el Dr. Paat y su grupo
de proveedores de salud del hospital St. Lukes.
El 6 de septiembre del 2011 en colaboración con Penta Career
estarán comenzando las clases gratuitas de GED/Basic Skills.
Estas se reunirán los martes y jueves de 9:30am a 12:30pm en el
Centro de PHCA, 12282 Jefferson en Perrysburg.
Cada año, la Asociación lleva a cabo el Festival South of
the Border, que dirige todos sus fondos recaudados para los
programas que ofrece el Centro de PHCA. En los últimos años la
concurrencia fue aproximadamente de 3.000 personas, bajando este
año a los 1.400. “Esto es una señal de la economía”, comentó
Anita Sánchez-Serda en comunicación con La Prensa acerca del
festival.
“No hemos cambiado los precios de admisión por los pasados 8
años. Este es un evento que la gente espera cada año”. Ella
agregó que el éxito fue posible gracias a las incontables horas
de trabajo que dedicaron los presidentes de junta, los
patrocinadores y por supuesto los 150 voluntarios de la
comunidad que trabajaron en diferentes áreas del festival.
Stephanie resumió que su misión es continuar la expansión y
crecimiento del Centro de PHCA y reafirmar y extender la
colaboración con otras organizaciones del área.

Stephanie Serda is new PHCA director

The Perrysburg Heights Community Association (PHCA)
selected in July 2011, Stephanie Serda as the director of
programs for the Center. Stephanie, who earned a Bachelor in
Science and Education from Bowling Green University, is the
first full time director for the center.
Stephanie has being involved with PHCA center for a long time,
“practically, I grow up here,” said to La Prensa. She
remembered when she was a child and spent her afternoons after
school at the Center. “This is the neighborhood where my
grandparents lived and where we stayed so they could baby sit
us,” she recalled.
The Center was founded by Anita Sánchez-Serda, Ms.
Ramirez and Ms. Cárdenas, who were concerned about
the declining graduation rates and the educational limits in the
area. Joining forces, they started this project. At the
beginning, PHCA Center was located inside a trailer. In 1996 the
building, where it is housed now, was opened, having new
additions and improvements throughout the years.
At the present time, PHCA Center supports children from kinder
to 12th grade with after school instruction. They
have volunteers, workers from Americorp, and tutors from Bowling
Green State University.
Wednesdays, evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 free medical clinics are
offered by Dr. Paat and his group of health providers
from St. Luke’s Hospital.
On September 6th in partnership with Penta Career,
free GED/Basic Skills classes will be starting Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 9:30am to 12:30pm at their location, 12282
Jefferson, Perrysburg.
Every year, The Association puts together the South of the
Border Festival, utilizing all the proceeds for the programs
offered at the Center. Last few years, the attendance reached to
3,000 people, decreasing this year to 1,400. “It is a sign of
the economy,” commented Anita Sánchez-Serda in communication
with La Prensa.
“We have not changed the admission fee for more than 8 years.
This is an event they wait for the entire year to attend,” she
said. She also stated that the success of the Festival is the
results of the countless hours of work and support of groups of
chairpersons, supporters, and of course for the 150 community
volunteers that helped in different areas.
Stephanie concluded saying that her mission is to continue the
expansion and development of the PHCA center and extend the
collaboration with other organizations form the area.
