Joe Boyd, a
1950’s middle-aged baseball fanatic, sells his soul to the
Devil, Mr. Applegate, for “one good long ball hitter” for his
favorite team, the Washington Senators. Mr. Applegate turns Boyd
into 22-year-old sports superstar, Joe Hardy. He leaves his wife
behind and as Joe Hardy he transforms the hapless Senators into
a winning team, only to realize the true worth of the life (and
wife) he’s left at home. With the help of a handy escape clause
and a guilt-ridden temptress named Lola, Joe outsmarts the
Devil, returns to his former self and shepherds the Senators to
the World Series.
Filled with
hit songs like “Whatever Lola Wants,” “Shoeless Joe from
Hannibal, Mo.” and “You Gotta Have Heart,” “Damn Yankees” hit
seven Tony Award-winning home runs.
