MetroHealth hosts Mi
Comunidad Family Day
By Arooj Ashraf, La Prensa Correspondent
Mi MetroHealth, Mi Comunidad Family Day was
held at the hospital’s pavilion on Saturday, July 28, 2012 and
attracted more than a 700 people, including children. “The
purpose of the event was to increase community outreach,” said
Luz Y. Oyola, Community Health Outreach Manager at
MetroHealth Medical Center.
Along with free mammograms
and breast exams for women over 35 years of age without health
insurance through the AMIGA Breast Cancer program, the
hospital offered free pap smears, free testing for glucose and
body mass index; also, dental screenings for underinsured and
uninsured patients. Oyola said the participants were registered
for follow-ups to continue their health monitoring after the
event.
Thirty-five corporations
and community organizations participated in the event to support
health in the Cleveland community. The Pavilion was set up for
face paintings, live music, Zumba demonstrations, and
performances by the Julia DeBurgos Cultural Center’s
dance teams.
Along with a bouncing
house, children partook in many fun activities that taught them
safety and fitness values. Strapped to a resistance belt many
tested their strengths as they ran towards a cone. Others
learned how to dial 911 in case of an emergency and to
differentiate between common household products that can become
deadly when confused for other products.
Children activities also
included a coloring contest and free child I.D. and
fingerprinting.
No event is complete
without delicious and nutritious food and MetroHealth’s Chef
Pete provided visitors with Puerto Rican style chicken rice and
beans. María Galindo-DaSilva, Patient Support and
Language Access Specialist at MetroHealth, said the hospital
takes pride in practicing its message of healthy living style
and has provided its staff and patients with fresh and healthy
meal options.
Dentists Noora Khadeir
and Waleed Elmallah taught the basics of dental hygiene
in the dental screenings mobile unit. Both stressed the
important of brushing twice a day and flossing after meals to
prevent cavities. Dr. Elmallah said cavities were the most
common found through such screenings and can be detected and
prevented early if patients seek dental care at least once a
year.
